The Perils of Trying to Fix Your Garage Door Yourself

Many homeowners claim to be DIY experts, while others simply begrudge paying a professional to help them repair anything! When it comes to broken garage doors, the temptation to fix it themselves will always be there for DIYers or anyone who refuses to accept the fact that the work may be beyond their capabilities. While a scattering of homeowners may have the knowledge, tools and training to repair their own garage doors, most do not, and since garage doors are heavy objects that can cause damage to property or injury to individuals, it’s never a wise idea to attempt any repairs without the help of a garage door technician.

If you’re still not convinced that someone qualified and experienced should be handling your garage door problems, here are some perils that just might change your mind:

  • The torsion springs could cause serious injury

Winding up when the garage door closes, torsion springs are often under immense strain and tension, and can cause serious harm to anyone in the vicinity (and especially the DIYer!) should they release during an amateur repair job.

  • DIY garage repairs can end up costing you big bucks

If the main reason you’re attempting to repair your garage door yourself, is because you want to save money by not hiring a professional, you may well have shot yourself in the foot! Botched and unsafe repairs can end up costing a lot more to correct than the original problem, and in the process, you may even damage other components and make the problem even worse.

  • A falling garage door can cause serious injury

Because the built-in safety mechanisms are usually disengaged when a garage door is being repaired, this makes the door extremely vulnerable to falling down and causing serious injury to anyone under, or close to it. Often weighing more than 100 pounds, it’s not beyond belief that a falling door could even kill an infant or pet.

  • Your vehicle might be damaged in the process

Many DIYers do attempt to repair their own garage doors when they break, and often ‘complete’ the work without realising that they haven’t repaired the problem properly. If this is the case, not only could the faulty door cause injury to a person, but it could damage your vehicle, too.

There are many perils associated with trying to repair garage door problems alone, and when you consider what might be at stake just for the sake of trying to save money (or not wanting to dent your pride by admitting you can’t fix something yourself!), is it really worth it?

Don’t be a dodgy DIYer, get your garage door repaired by a qualified technician!
